Vs 1:
I know somebody out here today
Can relate to what I’m about to say
Growing up in the Ghetto life was so dam hard
Drawing water from a well, living in a house that was falling apart
Mama cooked our dinner on a wood stove
Washed our clothes in a moping pail, and hanged them outdoors
It was so frustrating sleeping on the floor
With a blanket over my body, hoping it would keep me warm

Vs 2:
Living on welfare with three mouth to feed
Barely making ends meets
I wore bell bottom jeans and penny loafer shoes
Kids would pick on me everyday at school
I would come home running to mama, with tears in my eyes
She would take me in her arms, and tell me everything’s gonna be alright
Baby don’t worry about what people say
Cause the one that’s talking bad about you, might need you someday

Chorus:
Make your haters your motivator
That’s what mama use to say
You don’t need people like them in your life anyway
Baby keep your head up and keep moving on
Someday you are going to rise above it all
So to everybody who shunned me
Said I would never mount to nothing
Look at me now I’m all over your TV

Vs 3:
So much was going on but there was nothing I could do
But mama had faith that God would see us through
On cold winter days I had to go out and chop wood
A little kerosene on the fire made it burn good
In those time of needs daddy was no where to be found
The last time I saw his face is when he walked out
But mama did her best to take care of me
Stood beside me through all of my difficulties

Bridge Chorus:

Now I’m all grown up looking back to where I come from
If it wasn’t for your prayers mama I wouldn’t be where I am today
If I ever have a daughter I want her to be just like you
A beautiful strong God fearing woman mama I love you
I’m gonna teach her all the things that you taught me
And do all the things for her that you did for me
Thank you for the prayers you prayed, and for the love you gave
And for the words of wisdom you taught me along the way

Chorus:

Dennis. Wow! Very heartfelt and moving. If this is about a real woman, you are blessed to have them in your life. If not, you've shown great ability to connect with a character. Some things...

Washed our clothes in a moping pal

Should be 'mopping pail'

If it wasn’t for your prayers mama I wouldn’t be where I’m are... This isn't proper grammar...

Nice song!

Angelo

Thank you so much for commenting on the song lyric that I written. I did go back and revised a few words. To say this is a real life story I lived through it. This was written from my experience. Everything I mention in this lyric is reality. Although my mother is gone home to be with the Lord-she was a wonderful woman. Thanks Dennis

Dennis,

I like this.  Has lots of emotional appeal and I'm sure people can relate.

I'm not a musician but I would consider working on the meter to keep it balanced and basically the same between the verses.
And in the chorus I really don't think you need lines 6- 8.  Take a look below. The message and heart of what the singer or point of view is trying to get across comes through just fine without those lines.   Singer doesn't have to prove himself in my humble opinion.  : )     TV line detracts from the message which is a great one in a good story.  : )
A few minor grammatical errors and the title.....  I think you meant......  Mama's Prayers.     Rise Above it All  might work also.

Chorus:
Make your haters your motivator
That’s what mama use to say
You don’t need people like them in your life anyway
Baby keep your head up and keep moving on
Someday you are going to rise above it all

I agree with OD. It is a great story, but a little to wordy with more information than is needed. OD gave  you some good examples of how  you can say the same thing with less words so that it works in song form.

Good Luck you are off to a good start.

Peggy

May I update everyone on this song "Mama's Prayers" by our friend Dennis Wright.

I contacted Dennis by personal message on SongRamp and offered to help him shorten his song and put it in a format that would fit a song.

Dennis; being the ultimate gentleman he is; thanked me for reading his song and for being interested in his story behind his lyrics; however at first; he did not want anyone to mess with his "Baby" (his lyrics) because they were so personal to him.

I finally got him to understand he could keep his original lyrics to do with as he please; later on.  Finally Dennis agreed to allow me to write another version of his song (trying to keep all the information and emotion Dennis felt as he wrote this song). He also allowed me to bring in my mentor and dear friend Marc Alan Barnette (MAB), to give some advise on the lyrics, put a melody to it, and record it for Dennis.

MAB did a recording of this song in the downtown Nashville studio of his friend Jay Vern, and they recorded it today.

Sounds great, I hope Dennis can get his first recorded song up-loaded on the Ramp's open mic soon.

Good for you Dennis, I'm happy to have played a small part in helping you hear your first song recorded.
I hope you like your song.

Dennis' song "Mama's Prayers" is now uploaded on the open mic (as of 6/15/15) or should be available from his homepage; if anyone like like to give it a listen.  I tried to add a link directly to his song but I'm not sure I did it right.
