My son Chris Mondak, who is a high school junior, formed the rock band NxT with three of his classmates back in August (Chris is a serious musician. For example, he performed at Carnegie Hall last year, he was the bass player this year in the Jazz Band of America where he played with jazz legend Wycliffe Gordon and Grammy winner Shelly Berg, and he'll be working this summer with nine-time Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis). The Damsel
Words by Jeff Mondak
Music and Performance by NxT
The young man in our legend
A long-forgotten name
Hoped to slay a dragon
And win eternal fame
He sought a distant tower
A princess he could save
His mirror made him handsome
His armor made him brave
He rode off on his journey
For all that’s good and right
He called himself courageous
He called himself a knight
At last he reached the tower
He called with voice so true
“Don’t worry fairest damsel
“I’m here to rescue you!”
(but) The damsel said no
The damsel said no
She told the knight to go
The damsel said no
(She said) “I’m not some helpless victim
“In peril or in plight
“This isn’t any fairytale
“And I don’t need a knight”
“I’ve never seen an ogre
“A wizard or an elf
“And if a dragon comes my way
“I’ll handle it myself”
“I’m up here in this tower
“A place of my own choice
“I don’t need a hero
“And I don’t like your voice”
“A man can be my equal
“I’ll have him by my side
“But if you think I need you
“Then get on your horse and ride”
The damsel said no
The damsel said no
She told the knight to go
The damsel said no
“Your manners are alarming
“Your armor is a mess
“You’ll never be Prince Charming
“And I’m not in distress”
The damsel said no
The damsel said no
She told the knight to go
The damsel said no
