Your father beat you badly
When you were just a child,

When he'd come home drunk and wild,
And he'd preach of virtuous living
From his peak of self-denial
And you keep it in a corner of your life.
And the cuckoo, and the ticking
Seemed to mock you from its height,
And you'd contemplate the clock-spring
As he wound it nice and tight,
And you made your plans for leaving
When you'd go to bed at night,
And you hid them in a corner of your life.

You left school for the Army
You were told you see the sights
And you must've killed a dozen men
In the war zone firefight.
Then you went into business
Selling dreams to those who'd bite
At the bait pulled from a corner of your life.
And you sold them eggs in China
And frog legs up in France
You wined the women nightly
But you never learned to dance.
And they told you that they loved you
But you knew they were rife with lies 
And you hated them in a corner of your life.

Well your old man died of madness
But he'd long since lost his sight
He was just in time for Christmas 
On a cold December night
And you wound up earning millions
On compact fluorescent lights
But they can't illume that corner of your life.
And you brush your teeth with champagne
Just to whet your appetite
And your bed is a great big one
With the sheets all crisp and white.
And you bought a Triumph Spitfire
And you drive it late at night
As you try to escape that corner of your life.
