Gerry Coogan songs
In Inverness, where I now live, there's a local poet called Sandra Proctor who usually composes a new poem every week which she recites at the Thursday folk music night in the splendid Waterfront restaurant and bar during a break in the music.
It had never really occurred to her to write song lyrics but one week she mentioned that she'd penned some words with a view to them being made into a song so I offered to knock out a tune for them.
This is the first bit of recording that I've done for a couple of years and I think it might also be the first tune I've ever written in the absurd and unholy key of Db major! The lyric should obviously be sung by a woman but I haven't got a suitable one available at the moment so I'm singing it on this demo until I can get it done properly.
P.S. I have no idea what genre this should be classified as. All I know is that it isn't reggae!.
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
But you have gone and left me on my own to raise our child

IF ONLY I HAD WINGS

I stand upon the cliffs of Mohar and I stare out to sea.
I hear the surf crash loud but through the mist I cannot see.
I gaze far down below and in the distance there I spy
A bird caught in the updraft, wings spread out and flying high
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
A bird caught in the updraft, wings spread out and flying high
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
My heart beats hard within my breast as you come into view
If only I could fly, my love, I'd gladly follow you.
I cannot see you clearly but my heart calls out your name
And though I love you dearly, I know you don't feel the same.
I cannot see you clearly but my heart calls out your name
And though I love you dearly, I know you don't feel the same.
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
But you have gone and left me on my own to raise our child
I cannot bear to tie you down, my love needs to run wild.
So I must let you go from me - my love, I set you free
And I can only hope that one day you'll come back to me.
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
So I must let you go from me - my love, I set you free
And I can only hope that one day you'll come back to me.
What would I give to fly, my love, if only I had wings.
I'd swoop and soar and wheel for you
And happily I'd sing
If only I had wings.
If only I had wings.
