A headline caught my eye as I read the morning news
A short obituary at the bottom of page two
Mr. Allen was the richest man in this part of the state
But he locked himself away behind his walls and iron gates
It got me to thinking 'bout what makes a person rich
The way I've got it figured, it comes down to this...

It ain't how you make your living, it's the way you live
It's the love you leave behind when you finally leave this earth

Its no sin to be wealthy and no virtue to be poor
But it seems some folks are always wanting more
It brings to mind a story from the Good Book Jesus told
About a man who had the world but gave up his own soul
Now I aint been schooled in preaching or praying
But if I had to guess, I think He was saying
