I wrote this song after finding a small red Valentine's Day Heart on the ground in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans.  I have never seen such devastation, nor felt such a sense of loss in my life. 

This is my meager attempt at a tribute to those people and their catastrophy.

Little Red Heart

Well we never had much money
Just plain and simple folk
Then all we had was washed away
When that damned old levee broke

They brought us back to show us
There was nothin left to see
But the remnants of a thousand lives
Crushed like all our   dreams

But as I stood there in the ruins
Feeling nothing but despair
I looked down and saw a message
A sign of hope, just lying there

It was a Little Red Heart 
With the words I Love You
lying right there on the ground
where our home once stood
A gift from someones Valentine
Changed into a hopeful sign
That we can make a brave new start
If we keep love in all our hearts

I took a picture with my mind
But left that heart there, in the mud
To send its message to the world
That out of pain might come some good

Yes , we lost  everything we owned
And others paid the final price
But memories of that little heart
Will help me through the darkest night
