The Daily Bread
She used to volunteer at the daily bread
when it was open two days a week
but now with hard times upon us
it's a full time job
though I've got plenty on my plate
business execitive that I am
I can't help but admire, the compasion
the fire that burns inside her
I stood in line at her station
until I was next to be served
she showed me a menu
salsberry steak with the works
sweet potatoes, corn on the cob
I felt uneasy when I said
I don't need a free meal
and she said ok then what's the deal
I shyly answered, what would be the
price of a kiss, she laughed
I should slap you, boy you are fresh
I backed up a step or two
when she said, what's your fav color
tiger striped or blue?
then she tossed me an apron
and said why don't you try life
from my side of the counter?
and from my new point of view
it became clear, that love was meant
for more than two
I quit my lofty position
and now I don an apron every day
as Mary plainly said
it's not for everybody
but some of us
are made that way
now when day is done
we head off in different directions
you see with a girl like Mary
you do things the old fashion way
it goes like this
you have to earn your first date
not to mention that first kiss
