Music by Tim Wheeler
This was originally posted two years ago, and I thought I'd repost it today in honour of your Memorial Weekend in the USA
Thanks once again to Tim for his sensitive and moving performance!
WARNING:...have a box of Kleenex handy!
There’ll Be No Last Dance
Soft strains of Schubert drift on the breeze
To a silken gowned beauty sitting under the trees
She gazes with wonder and love undisguised
At a dark haired young soldier with laughing blue eyes
He smiles at her tenderly, gives her his ring
Then he leads her inside as the last waltz begins
Chorus
As they whirl round the dance floor he makes her a vow
If the music stops playing, we’ll keep dancing somehow
As long as the rivers run down to the sea
There’ll be no last dance for you and me
There’ll be no last dance for you and me…
Just two months later her whole world is rocked
A telegram tells her the music has stopped
His comrades have written he was brave to the end
And enclosed is a letter he had no time to send
It says:-
Remember my sweetheart, I made you a vow
If the music stops playing we’ll keep dancing somehow
As long as the rivers run down to the sea
There’ll be no last dance for you and me
She sits on the porch of the old people’s home
She never talks, she just sits all alone
Her shaky hand clutches an old photograph
Of a dark haired young soldier with blue eyes that laugh
But inside she’s shining, forever entranced
Wrapped in his arms in an endless slow dance
As they whirl round the dance floor he makes her a vow
If the music stops playing, we’ll keep dancing somehow
As long as the rivers run down to the sea
There’ll be no last dance for you and me
Remember my sweetheart, I made you a vow
If the music stops playing we’ll keep dancing somehow
As long as the rivers run down to the sea
There’ll be no last dance for you and me
There’ll be no last dance for you and me…..

dillon 2008-06-07 | Sounds almost like a Civil War story. I kept a box of kleenex handy -- as well as a speed dial to my shrink...but I didn't need them. I liked the story in the song. Nicely done. [Delete] |

GrumpHarmony 2008-06-07 | Tim's voice is so achingly sweet that I'd cry if he sang 3 blind mice but this lyric and presentation is just too beautiful and just too much...where the heck is that box of kleenex... [Delete] |
Tromminator 2008-06-08 | Great collaboration, first of all. This song sounds like it belongs in a movie. Definitely it sounded like Schubert and lyrics painted the loss perfectly. Wonderful! Mike. {:~) [Delete] |
invisibleman 2008-06-08 | Okay Diane; you got me. To me it was folkloric. Picturesque lyrics that tell a sad story of how someone can keep a person so alive in their mind that they stop living as far as the rest of the world can see. Good again Di! Enjoyed it. gary [Delete] |

PamelaElaine 2008-06-09 | Diane, I can picture the woman sitting there thinking of him. What a beautiful story. Tim does a great job capturing the story with his melody. I sing for the folks at the retirement homes every chance I can get. They do have stories to tell, like this one. I see some of the folks have tears in their eyes when I sing a song that reminds them of their loved ones. I don't mean to make them sad, but it brings those special memories back for them. You got me thinking, I need to call and set up a time to go sing for them. Thanks Diane and Tim. Loved your song! Pamela [Delete] |
geediane 2008-06-09 | Outstanding writing. Excellent lyrics! Diane you really got it going on! Beautiful music too! [Delete] |

DanFalvey 2008-06-22 | Beautiful and poignant lyrics Diane. Although there is great sadness, there is also a sense of comfort from the line 'inside she's shining'. The way you encapsulate a whole life in this piece is quite masterful. Tim's voice and the delicate arrangement really conveys the emotion of the song. [Delete] |
