This volume contains all my song collabs from the archive Songramp site, up until July 2014
Most of the love songs I write come from my imagination rather than personal experience...but this one is probably the most personal I have ever written....it literally tells the story of my broken heart! It was written in my head over a period of a few days spent lying on a beach on a Greek island in May 2004. It was only the second or third lyric I had ever written, but I was well aware, as I was composing it, that it didn't follow a recognised structure....it has no real chorus, no real hook etc.....and I never seriously expected to see it become a song. But Ronnie saw it on my page and decided to give it a go.....and he didn't change a single word!...bless him! :)
It was only long after I'd written it that I realised how detached the writing is...it's not written in the first person...hardly even in the third person....strange for something so personal!
Ronnie, you know what this means to me....you found exactly the right way to tell this story...thank you, my friend!
Jamie (songgoddess) later recorded a lovely version, which can be found on her homepage.
By the way....I'm very glad to say that broken hearts CAN be mended! :)
Broken
A heart left undefended
A dream condemned to die
A hope that hangs suspended
By a Judas kiss goodbye
A choice between old passion
And new love to be betrayed
A smiling sweet assassin
With a sacrificial blade
A future stolen by a lie
A truth too ruthless to deny
A hurt that can't be mended
A wound that won't be tended
A joy too quickly ended
And a vow too soon unmade
Now everything is ended
For a love that waits to fade
The ghost of gone tomorrows
Whispers sadly on the stair
In a lonely house of sorrows
Filled with echoes of despair
The lines cannot be spoken
The guitar will not strum
The strings have all been broken
When the song had just begun
No more close harmonies to share
No sweet soul music fills the air
The last word has been spoken
It's a tune no key can open
The guitar strings are broken
And the chords are all undone
Now everything is broken
Everything is broken
And the song remains unsung
