Sitting in this sterile room,

Surrounded by the germ-free gloom,

A far-off voice ventured in

And captured my attention.

"It's not good news, Mrs. Jones;

Can't do much with these old bones.

Take care and try to make the best

Of the little time you have left."

The other voice was soft and unclear,

But I could tell it came through tears.

Sounds of hope mingled with regret

Of life lived and life not lived yet.

Good friends all come and go;

Their passing is a part of life.

Every true love that you know

Eventually will die.

That voice triggered something in me,

Fired up forgotten memories

Of the many good people I've met --

Some long dead, and some not dead yet.

Some from now, and some from back when,

I greeted these souls once again.

Some with a hug, a handshake, a kiss.

Every end begins something like this.

But I lost them all at goodbye.

Just then the doctor stepped in;

Said, "I'm not sure where to begin.

I'm afraid there is no answer

When the question is cancer."
