Since before you were born,

From those building blocks with letters

To your fifth Christmas morn.

Though I can't be there with you

After that first school bell,

Graduating from high school.

I blink again and there you are

Finishing college too.

I know you won't be living here

After that wedding bell,

In the vastness of space

Three grandchildren and another due -

Your mom and I are thrilled.

We've always been so proud of you,

And those big shoes you've filled.

Didn't expect that heart attack

Or this funeral bell.

Death won't change one simple fact -
