Our road to marital bliss

Was cleared by that first long kiss

And paved with good intentions.

Now, we all know where that leads;

All our wants turn into needs -

Dark alleys of dissension.

Our “I dos” became “I dids,”

But for the sake of the kids,

We stayed under the same roof.

For those who may not believe

That it’s easy to deceive,

You and I are living proof ...

… If you can call this living –

Buckets of blame – no forgiving.

We sit here every day;

Watch each other decay;

Lie about it and say

That it’s better this way.

Talking to a big brick wall

Beats talking to you at all -

There just might be an echo.

We can’t seem to sing along;

We’ve tried every style of song,

Alternative to zydeco.

From far away it appears

That we’re in our golden years.

Close up you can see the rust.

Don’t know when it got started.

What we held dear departed.

The first thing to go was trust.

It sure left us in the dust,

And we’re too old to adjust.

We sit here every day;

Watch each other decay;

Lie about it and say

That it’s better this way.
