I think I posted a full-band version of this a couple years back. I'm working on a solo acoustic project, and this is the stripped down arrangement.
At the end of the song my daughter Speaker walked into my studio (the kids have learned to heed the red light above the door), and I kept that little snippet of dialog in. She's 11, and a pretty good song writer in her own right.
It's a pretty grim view of Sin City and the effect it has on a man's weaknesses. I hope you like it.
Ten dollars for a cup of coffee
No wonder I hate this town
Naked dancer shows me what I’m missing
Queen of hearts with a dirty crown
My waitress says I’m looking lonely
I know she’s speaking in code
I’m down to my last twenty
Just enough to get me down the road
They call this the City of Lights
I can feel mine growing dim
Everybody wants something for nothing
Those odds are pretty slim
I don’t consider myself a gambler
I just wanted a little taste
In time I’ll replace the money
But it’s my soul got laid to waste
Chorus
Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas / We’ll make your dreams come true
Anything you want, any time of day / It’s all waiting here for you
Everything you’ve heard is true
I came here with money and a system
Yeah, no one’s ever thought of that before
I was winning for a while
But of course I wanted more
Doesn’t matter if you’re a genius
Maybe an idiot knows when to quit
Sooner or later the house will beat you
There’s no sympathy in the pit
Out here, time doesn’t seem to matter
I sold my watch to keep on playing
You won’t find a clock in a casino
You don’t care how long you’ve been staying
That jackpot’s just around the corner
I kept hearing myself say
But no one ever leaves here a winner
They just live to lose another day
Chorus
Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas / We’ll make your dreams come true
Anything you want, any time of day / It’s all waiting here for you
Everything you’ve heard is true
Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas / It's all waiting here for you
Everything you’ve heard is true
