The story: My dad's first surgery that gave us the diagnosis of colon cancer...was in 1989. During his recovery from the surgery and anesthesia, I spent the first night in the hospital by his bed. He woke in the middle of the night...and looked straight at me and said:
I can see my momma in a blue cotton dress and she's standing at the end of the old dirt road, calling me home.
Chills went up my spine...I think I stopped breathing for a moment. Dad was so silent...but he lived to be with us three more years before cancer took him.
Those words would not leave me.....
I was playing in a bluegrass band during that time...and wrote a song in memory of my dad and the life he lived as a child on a dirt farm in N. Louisiana. Joe and Lesley recorded it for me.
Without Daddy's words....I doubt that I would have ever written a single song lyric. Now, 17 years later...I've lost count of them.
Callin’ Me
Lyrics by Peggy Mack
Vocal, instrumentals and recording by Joe Attwood
Harmonies: Lesley Purdue
Twas only yesterday
That life was so simple
Hard days of working the soil
Rising before
The rooster crow
To a long life of sweat and toil
I can see my Momma
In her blue cotton dress
At the end of the old dirt road
She’s waving her hand now
Calling my name
Callin me to come on home
She’s callin, callin, callin
Callin me to come on home
Instrumental break
A family of the earth
Bound together by sorrow
Hearts filled with joy and love
Working together just to make ends meet
And blessed by God’s own love
Chorus:
I can see my Momma
In her blue cotton dress
At the end of the old dirt road
She’s waving her hand now
Calling my name
Callin me to come on home
She’s callin, callin, callin
Callin me to come on home
Instrumental break:
Now a lifetime has passed
Before these old eyes
I’m weary and I’m glory bound
My family and friends
Have gathered together
And wrapped me with their spirits
Around.
Chorus:
I can see my Momma
In her blue cotton dress
At the end of the old dirt road
She’s waving her hand now
Calling my name
Callin me to come on home
She’s callin, callin, callin
Callin me to come on home
