About three months ago, I was contacted by a local high school student who was producing a video about bullying. He asked if I would write a song that could be used as the "music bed" for the video. He will be graded on the video, and it will also be presented at the upcoming Family Career and Community Leaders of America's Ohio state convention, as well as their national convention in Washington, D.C.
I contacted Sheila Kaufman (sheilerk) and asked if she would be interested in working with me on the song. This is what we came up with. The student we wrote this for also has a shot at having the video featured on Ellen Degeneres' show, so we're crossing our fingers for him.
JUST ANOTHER DAY
Words & Music by Dale Crockett & Sheila Kaufman
Staring at the ceiling, heart pounding with dread
Fear grips my stomach, knowing what's ahead
There's no escape, there's no-one I can tell
Can't someone show me a way out of this hell
Throwing off my covers, my feet touch the floor
Trying to force myself to walk out the door
Wish I was invisible so trouble'd stay away
Hoping to stay safe just another day
CHORUS:
JUST ANOTHER DAY OF BULLYING AND PAIN
JUST ANOTHER DAY IN THIS LIFE OF MISERY
INVOLUNTARY TEARS, HIDDEN OUT OF SHAME
ISN'T THERE ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME
The taunting and teasing started in third grade
Bruises came soon after – at least that kind would fade
I was safe at home, but now that has changed
Texts and cyber-slurs always saying that I'm strange
Labels are their weapons, they wield them with such skill
With practiced slurs and sharpened tongues they move in for the kill
They taunt, harass and torment, while silent watchers stand
Take a look, then turn away. Not one will lend a hand
Will no one, will no one, will no one lend a hand
(CHORUS REPEAT)
