Marc-Alan Barnette songs
A case of "Be Careful what you write about, it might come true".
In 2007, I was hosting a songwriters camp weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nv. working with several campers. One of the things myself and 8 pros from Nashville did was meet with individuals who were paired up to write songs.
One of my groups were two sweet little old ladies who's guitar player did not show up. So I filled in and decided to work with them. They had read something about a celebrity who wanted to found a shelter for animals displaced by Hurricaine Katrina. I wanted to teach these women how to write about something without having a "Shelf life' expiration deal to it, and so many songs being written about Katrina, this was a way to avoid some of that.
Recently with the flooding in Nashville, it came back to me pretty vividly.
Ended up being a favorite of mine, with a pretty cool twist at the end. Hope you like it.
I GOT LUCKY

I GOT LUCKY

5-10-07
Rain falling down, water rising up
Looked like the end of the world
Channel five said it was gonna be bad
But this was so much worse
Out in the yard, that dog paddled
Right up to my porch
Howling at the sky to let him in
I opened my front door
Chorus
LUCKY WAS ALL IT SAID
ON THAT ID TAG AROUND HIS NECK
NO ADDRESS JUST ONE MORE MOUTH TO FEED
LOW ON HOPE
AND I GOT LUCKY
Two days later, too much rain
Up on the second floor
Supplies are running a little too thin
No way to get any more
Looking at that very last pack
Of crackers and sardines
Don’t know who is gonna go first
Him or Me
Chorus
Bridge
Never would have made it through that insanity
If that mangy mutt hadn’t heard the boat on my street
Howling at the guys to rescue me and him
That’s how I met my best friend
