PJ Steelman songs
A while back, I was in a restaurant with some friends enjoying a good meal. A table or two away from us sat a young couple. They were having one of those heated, animated, WHISPERED conversations. We tried to ignore them, but, their whispers grew louder and louder. Then, all of a sudden the young lady said out loud to her gentleman friend...Would it kill you to love me?
For all of the songwriters that are reading this, you know, I mean you absolutely know when you have heard a good song idea. Yes, I know, I am writing a song about these folk's misfortunes, but, it is their fault entirely for having their argument within my hearing range. I have decided at this point in life, that everyone and everything is fair game for a good song.
Well, I jotted down a few thoughts on a napkin to hold me over until I could get to a place where I could put the song together. Except for a few changes, this is exactly how I wrote it on the first go round. That really doesn't happen often, most good songs are like pulling teeth...or maybe getting run over by Bubba Smith. Neither one of those will turn out to be a good time.
My song doesn't follow the couple at the restaurant at all, this could be about anyone, you or me. Unless you married your high school sweet heart and have lived happily ever after, you have probably been in this very place....and like some of us, maybe more than once. I hope you enjoy this one....
Would It Kill You
PJ Steelman
I watched that truck drive away 20,000 times
You'ld think that I'd wear out the scenes, playing it over in my mind
Everytime I see it, it's more painful than the last
And everyday my future looks much more like my past
Would it kill you to pick up that phone, it wouldn't take much time
It do me good to hear your voice hanging on the line
Would it kill you....just to love me
Would it kill you....just to need me
Would it cause you pain to say my name
Then you could spit it out
If you were standing here today
It wouldn't change my doubts
Would it kill you....just to love me
I light another cigarette and then I put it out
Then I light it back again, cause I can't do without
My empty glass says there's no pain, so, why'd I feel this way
I want to go, I have to go, but, I just guess I'll stay
I've run all out of magic words, there's no slight of hand
I need some smoke and mirrors, but, I don't have a plan
Would it kill you....just to love me
Would it kill you....just to need me
Would it cause you pain to say my name
Then you could spit it out
If you were standing here today
It wouldn't change my doubts
Would it kill you....just to love me
Would it kill you?
