Charles Saunders songs
This song was written in honor of and dedicated to my parents for Christmas 2004. Instead of buying them gifts, I wanted to do something different. I had just finished writing my first ever song (Bridge That Won't Burn) so I thought why not write a song for my mom and dad. Immediately I knew it would be about the Christmas story because every Christmas they would tell us how, when I was four months old, they were Joseph and Mary and I was the baby Jesus in a live nativity held in front of our church.
I was driving when the idea came to me and I began to sing what was essentially the third verse. I scribbled the words on the back of a card while trying to keep my car on the road and then sang it over and over to fix the tune in my mind. I finished the rest of the song when I returned home the next day.
My friends, Mike and Beverly (who arranged the song) secretly arranged for it to be performed at my mom and dad's church for their Christmas eve candlelight service (they only let me in on it three days ahead of time). It was one of the greatest experiences of my life to see their surprise and joy that night - all praise and glory to the Lord!!!

Verse
Lying there upon the hay,
She didn't look like a holy mother
Just a young girl who gave birth
In a stable by the way.
She didn't look like the chosen one -
Just a humble carpenter's wife -
Yet the angel said the child she bore
Was Son of the Most High.
Chorus
"Glory to God," the angels sang,
"Peace, good will to all
For this day to you is born
Christ, the Son of God."
Chorus
Kneeling there upon the straw,
He didn't look like a special father
Just a young man with wife and child
In a roadside cattle stall.
He didn't look like he'd raise a king -
Just a humble carpenter man -
Yet the angel said this boy of his
Would save us from our sins.
Chorus
Verse
Nestled there in Mary's arms,
He didn't look like a savior
Just a newborn baby boy
Wrapped up to keep him warm.
He didn't look like the Prince of Peace -
Just a humble carpenter's son -
Yet the angels sang to all the world,
"Immanuel has come."
Chorus
