CAPTAIN ARKANSAS
He puts on his uniform at the same time every day
like he did in '65, down in Cam Ranh Bay.
Polished bars and spit-shined shoes shuffle through the door
at the VA Center mess hall, down on the 2nd floor.
He stands at rapt attention as he oversees his troops,
makes 'em march in single file between the salads and the soups.
He's still out on maneuvers in an un-declared war,
in his mind he don't know what he's fighting for.
They call him Captain Arkansas at the home in Jacksonville.
The staff there sometimes laughs at him, but his soldiers never will.
To those who come to visit, he's someone's old grandpa,
to the men in his command he's Captain Arkansas
He was born in Little Rock in 1922
His favorite color’s camouflage and his bloods red, white and blue.
Nowadays his body’s weak but his spirit’s just as strong
As it was in Phu Bai when he fought the Vietcong.
His family never comes around but he don't give a damn,
the only one he cared about was his Uncle Sam.
the only one he cared about was his Uncle Sam.
When he dies they'll shoot the guns, fold the flag and pray,
and in his Captain's uniform, he'll proudly march away.
and in his Captain's uniform, he'll proudly march away.
REPEAT CHORUS
TAG He puts on his uniform at the same time every day…
