This one perhaps would benefit from some background. First, when I write children's poetry, I always try to keep two points in mind. One is that kids are not to be underestimated. I don't like poems that are coarse, simplistic, or talk down to kids. The other is to try to write poems that are interesting enough for parents to enjoy, because parents usually buy the books and magazines, and often read the poems to their kids. Both of these points hopefully are on display in Toy Box. Second, a bit about influences. For kids' poems, I think Shel Silverstein was an absolute genius. His poems are joyful and edgy at the same time. As to music, I enjoy a lot of artists, but one favorite is Steve Goodman (the guy who wrote City of New Orleans and You Never Even Call Me by My Name). I mention this because Goodman has a hilarious live medley of "dead girl" songs--Teen Angel, Tell Laura I Love Her, and Strange Things Happen. Rolled together, all of these various points got me thinking that it might be fun if Toy Box were done in the style of a "dead girl" song, complete with dramatic music, spoken bridge, etc. Well, I don't think any of my other songs are arranged or performed in a manner that has more than a tiny bit of influence from me; I write the lyrics, and let people who know what they're doing take it from there. But George Hanlon was kind enough to humor me on Toy Box, and he absolutely nailed the style. I think he has put together a fun, funny kids' song that parents will also enjoy. Hopefully I'm not the only one who thinks so.

The race was on to get a toy
And Thomas was the winner
He beat me to the toy box
But he ended up as dinner
The toy box ate my brother
'cause he made a tragic blunder
He entered with a head-first dive
And quickly got pulled under
The toy box ate my brother
And now he wants another
The toy ate my brother
And now he's after you
He kicked his feet and called my name
While our toy box drooled and slurped
I knew dear Thomas was no more
When that toy box loudly burped
The toy box ate my brother
And now he wants another
The toy ate my brother
And now he's after you
No toy box can be trusted
So I make this solemn promise
I'll rid the world of all of them
In memory of poor Thomas
I know you must be frightened
So I will help you, girls and boys
Just ship your toy box off to me
Along with all of your new toys
The toy box ate my brother
And now he wants another
The toy ate my brother
And now he's after you
