As some of you know I went to fiddle camp for a number of years in California. 
The director, Alasdair Fraser, a master Scottish fiddler, 
often would begin the lesson by 
playing different rhythms 
in a call and response
 fashion.
As they grew more and more complicated 
the students became more aware of what they had
to work on to improve their technique. My response to that  new awareness was 
to write this song.



SWALLOWED A NOTE      by  Ann Mayo Muir
                                                           
I swallowed a note right down my Throat
The taste was a delight !
It was so good I thought I should
Enjoy another bite.
I swallowed that note And I felt it float
Way down into my feet.
I never had seen my rhythm machine
But, I felt it start to beat.

I started to move, get into a groove.
I began to boogie and twist.
The rhythm took hold, uncontrolled
With no way to resist.
I caught a friends eye and I asked him why
Not share a bite with me.
He gobbled it in and started to spin
and dance around so free.

It Makes me want to pick up my fiddle
Pick up my fiddle and play.
Chase those noted out into the middle
And show them where to stay. 
All those notes can stay in my fiddle
And come out when I say.

I looked in the sky, a vision flew by
That caught me by surprise.
A whole fleet of notes like little sail boats
Came floating before my eyes.
I saw tiny trails of musical scales, 
Arpeggios in the breeze.
The sharps and flats had wings like bats
followed by measures and keys.

They liked my beat, thought it was neat
And they asked if they could Stay.
This sweet melody floating so free,
was looking for someplace to play.
I watched them collide and then divide
And into my fiddle they flew.
They won't go away. They're pleading to play,
So what's this fiddler to do?
