Ann Mayo Muir songs
I CAN'T SPELL
2009 Ann Mayo Muir/Phil Marshall
Annie sent me a poem she had written that touched a nerve with its description of childhood pain. While I initially had a different concept for the song, it seemed to take on a life of its own and it wound up directing me. Annie is proving herself to be a powerful and versatile singer. Thank you for the opportunity, Annie! Love, -PHil
From Annie:
A dear friend of mine said something I loved hearing about this piece. He said that It reminded him of Porgy and Bess- by George Gershwin , and that that there is something very "black" about it-something searingly painful and personal, that the listener almost feels like they're intruding. This was a very extraordinary compliment.
This is certainly a very special Collaboration with Uncle Phil. I always hoped I would connect with him one day. I give him all credit for his vision to put my lyrics into this beautiful setting . I am thrilled by his work.
There's not much to say about my part in it except that It's all true.
Annie
I am moving this song to my page.

Uncle Phil made the music
I Can't Spell
I Can’t Spell
I can’t Spell?
If you tell Mama
you’ll go to hell
I Don’t know why
I don’t know why
All those letters
Pass me by
I can’t spell
I can’t spell
If you tell mama
You’ll go to hell
They seem to smack
Me in the face,
Pass on by
All out of place.
The Other kids
They do so well
It's only me
I can't spell
They say I’m stupid
They call me names
They won’t let me
Play their games.
I know one
Four letter word.
But I’d get spanked
If mama heard.
My bum would hurt
From Daddy’s belt
But that won’t change
The words I spelt.
