Smoky Mountain Christmas Eve
Words & Music by AJ Lorden
I got a letter postmarked North Carolina
And I had a feeling what it was about
A Christmas invitation to my family get together
At the church hall without any doubt
I started coming up with all the old excuses
Why I didn’t have time to make the trip
When I noticed what was written at the bottom of a picture
Of my mountain family when I was a kid
(It said)
"Aren’t you tired of being alone at Christmas
When those church bells start ringing
We hope that you’ll be here"
Now I’m thinking ‘bout the candlelights
And I’m thinking ‘bout the silent nights
The Smoky Mountains are a beautiful sight
Beneath that moonlit, starry sky
I’m thinking ‘bout that big ol’ Christmas tree
Having dinner with the family
And seeing all the friends I’d love to see
This Smoky Mountain Christmas eve
Well I guess I’m gonna find a way to make it this year
And leave the west coast lights for the Blue Ridge nights
And a few days of holiday cheer
The jing-a-ling of Santa’s bells never felt right at eighty degrees
So I’m gonna get ready and head out of the city
And get back home to God’s country
‘cause I’m tired of being alone at Christmas
When those church bells start a-ringin'
You know where I want to be
I’ll be looking at the candlelights
And I’ll be walking in the silent night
The snowy mountains are a beautiful sight
Beneath that moonlit, starry sky
I’ll help ‘em decorate the Christmas tree
I'll have dinner with my family
And I’ll see all the friends I’ve wanted to see
This Smoky Mountain Christmas eve
I never realized how long I’ve been away
Now hold on ‘cause I’ll be stayin'
At least until New Year’s Day
Now I’m looking at the candlelights
And I’m a-walkin' in the silent nights
These snowy mountains are a beautiful sight
Beneath that moonlit, starry sky
I’m helping decorate the Christmas tree
I'm having dinner with my family
Seeing all the friends I wanted to see
This Smoky Mountain Christmas eve
