This is a song that Sergio Wals and I wrote together a few years ago. For the past two years, Joe Martin and I have been traveling to schools together for poetry and music performances. This recording is a live recording of Joe from a performance at Eagle Point Elementary School in Rossford, Ohio, from earlier today. The recording captures some of the energy that was on display (the kids were bouncing around like popcorn). To get a fuller sense of it, you can see the video on my Facebook page.
The Rock and Roll Hop
Words by Jeff Mondak
Music by Sergio Wals
Performed by Joe Martin
Wiggly toes and wiggly fingers
Sing along with all the singers
Rhythmic sounds that get us dancing
Music, music, it’s entrancing
Magic tones, we’re so excited
Firecrackers all ignited
Energy that’s quickly creeping
On our feet and now we’re leaping
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll hop
Racing fast and never stopping
Guitar chords that keep us hopping
Feet are stomping, hands are clapping
Mr. Mondak should not be napping
Sing so loud the window’s shaking
Richter thinks the earth is quaking
Listen for I speak profoundly
Later we’ll be sleeping soundly
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll hop
It’s better than a sugar rush
Or cartoons on TV
It twice as good as being bad
It’s rock-n-roll for me
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
We’re all smiling
We’re all jumping
Arms are waving
Fists are pumping
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll
Doin’ the rock-n-roll hop
