This is one of my better-known poems. It was first published in 2004 in the poetry anthology Rolling in the Aisles, a book that included works by many of my favorite poets, such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. Every year, I receive quite a few emails from children, or their parents or teachers, telling me the kids have recited my poems at their schools. Very often, the poem they've recited is "Daddy's Making Dinner." In many instances, videos of the recitations have been uploaded to sites such as YouTube. My version is aided by a terrific musical track by Michael Frazier. Nonetheless, my version is nowhere near as good as these, as performed by students around the world. Check them out--I know you'll be glad you did.

Daddy’s Making Dinner
Words and spoken vocal by Jeff Mondak
Vocal recorded by Alex Stangl
Music by Michael Frazier.
Daddy’s making dinner
I’ve seen it all before
French fries black and burning
And meat loaf on the floor
Daddy’s making dinner
The sugar bowl just broke
Fido ate the gravy
The house has filled with smoke
Daddy’s making dinner
But I’m not one to moan
Soon he will surrender
And go pick up the phone
Daddy made the dinner
Today’s my lucky day
Dinner’s in the trash can
And pizza’s on the way!
Other poems I've recited:
"There's a Bully in My Locker"
