The Broken Heart Award
Stepped down from that airplane a hundred miles from my home town
Didn’t want any fanfare didn’t want noone around
The girl I wanted to see was now married to another man
Then my mind flashed back to that day in Vietnam
When I opened that letter her words hit me like a napalm bomb
The girl I dated through high school and took to our senior prom
Told me she was tired of waitin she’d found somebody new
And oh the pain in the words I read as she said we’re through
Chorus
Some have called me a hero pinned metals upon my chest
Well I was just doin my job no more than all the rest
Now all is fair in love and war and I’ve felt what both can do
They each leave scars and some can’t be seen deep inside of you
Well I guess I shouldn’t blame you for findin someone new
You didn’t know if I’d make it home I might have done the same thing too
Still I’m wounded with this broken heart and the pain is hard to take
I’m just one of many casualties that’s fallen in loves wake
So I’ll just pick up my heart’s pieces until my faith in love’s restored
And accept the metal pinned inside my chest the broken heart award
So I’ll just pick up my heart’s piece’s until my faith in love’s restored
And accept the metal pinned inside my chest the broken heart award
