I was watching the finals of the National Spelling Bee on television a couple of weeks ago. As a side note, my nephew Greg was one of the 275 competitors in the finals, although not one of the final 13 who were on TV. Greg was the first student ever from his school district to qualify for the national, and everyone at his school treated him like a hero. I thought that was quite cool--that they were so supportive of an academic achievement. Anyhow, one of the words in the final was "weltschmerz," and the judge used the phrase "sentimental pessimist" in defining it. I thought "sentimental pessimist" was intriguing, and I couldn't really get anything together around "weltschmerz," so this is the result. Thanks once again to Alex for working on this!
Sentimental Pessimist
Music and performance by Alex Stangl
Words by Jeff Mondak
It seems that every dark cloud holds a picture
Of you the day you left me here alone
And when I look away from those cruel memories
I see my hand, it's reaching for the phone
I know deep in your heart that it's half empty
I hear the lack of feeling in your voice
The rain won't wash away this many ashes
And the sunrise come tomorrow has no choice
I wish I could I wish I could I wish I could resist
But I'm too sentimental A sentimental pessimist
These thoughts of you remain my one addiction
Your icy little laugh won't let me be
If I had better luck, then I'd be dying
For six cold feet of earth would set me free
Whatever doesn't kill you makes you weaker
The early worm gets eaten by the bird
The dove of love keeps messing on my windshield
You broke my heart the day you broke your word
I wish I could I wish I could I wish I could resist
But I'm too sentimental A sentimental pessimist
I'm sentimental with a twist
A sentimental pessimist
