First, my apologies for not being around much the past few weeks. I had a mild bout of pneumonia, which has put me well behind at my day job. That won't change for at least another week; it's the end of the semester, and I have a ton of grading to do. My wife, kids and I went to Cleveland over Thanksgiving to visit my family. The day after Thanksgiving, Sergio Wals flew in because we had a children's poetry and music performance that weekend at a Cleveland bookstore, followed by some recording. Songramp's Larry Galletta (tightrope) very kindly came over for the performance, and added some extremely cool guitar work during Sergio's set. Sergio and I then headed to Rick Keane's (rk8257) house, where Rick recorded some vocals for us. I mention this because both Larry and Rick asked about Alex Stangl. This reminded me of something we all know--that Alex is missed here, and that he remains in our thoughts. For those of you who don't know Alex, he's a tremendous songwriter and musician, and a wonderful friend to many of us here on Songramp. Unfortunately, Alex has had a miserable run of health issues for two full years now. Sergio and I consumed one of Alex's few good periods this past May when Alex did an amazing job producing and engineering Sergio's children's music CD. Anyhow, a year ago, Chad Calhoun (azappraiser) had the terrific idea of putting together a song as a tribute to Alex, and he asked me to chip in some lyrics. This is the song. Alex doesn't have any of his own songs posted at present on his Songramp site. If you haven't heard him, "The American and the Brit" is Alex's first Songramp co-write, and Alex has told me that "One Life Per Customer," is one of his favorite collaborations. For those of you who have favorite Stangl collabs on your pages, please remind us about them!
With Coffee and a Cigarette
Jeff Mondak & Chad Calhoun
With coffee and a cigarette
You pencil out a new vignette
You strum those strings and peer inside the soul
Your taxicab philosophy,
It rings with truth and clarity
Wisdom in the guise of rock’n’roll
Three chords of inspiration
Mr. Agent keeps the beat
From Strobic Axe to The Nation
From Aberdeen to Sherbrooke Street (it is what it is, it is what it is)
Who’d have thought you'd find us here
Each verse is like a two-way mirror
We see ourselves in every song you sing
And when you grace the words we write
You show the truth and shine the light
We hope you know the magic that you bring
Three chords of inspiration
Mr. Agent keeps the beat
From Strobic Axe to The Nation
From Aberdeen to Sherbrooke Street (it is what it is, it is what it is)
Though life may bring no guaranty
We hear the silent melody
This rollercoaster life you’re on
Leaves months before the light of dawn
Three chords of inspiration
Mr. Agent keeps the beat F
rom Strobic Axe to The Nation
From Aberdeen to Sherbrooke Street (it is what it is, it is what it is)
With coffee and a cigarette
You’ll pencil out a new vignette
You’ll strum those strings and peer inside our soul. . .
