Folks, we lost our buddy Dano several months ago. I guess I got a bit reflective with this song; but every move Dano made took patience and was a struggle. He grew up working in his father's local gas station/repair shop , and learned the trade of a mechanic very well. Dano was injured in Vietnam and spent two years at Walter Reed Hospital trying to recover. Among many injuries they had to pin his spine in three places. They never thought he would walk again but he did. Oh it wasn't pretty, with his right side limited in use, his walk was awkward and noticible; but he was walking. His father sold the gas station so he and Dano could farm together. Once Dano struggled to get on the seat of a tractor and combine, he was just fine. After several years of farming, the grain prices could not keep up with the rising cost of renting farm ground, fertilizer, and equipment debt, they had to give it up.
Dano went back to the bar and spent years on a bar stool visiting with his buddies. It shocked us all that he left the bar to open his own auto repair business. Ironic because the reason his dad sold the gas station was to find something Dano could do. It wasn't easy for Dano but he would quote a price and stick to it; no matter how long it took him. He developed a large following of customers that knew he would be fair and fix it right the first time. That move from the bar to opening his own shop was what most impressed me about him. As the song says "nothing on earth was easy to do, walking awhile in Dano's shoes". Thanks to MAB for his help on this song.
Walking Awhile In Dano's Shoes
MAB/OD
Dano Parthmore was sent to war
Vietnam bomb cut his tour short
13 soldiers in a duce-and a half
He was one of two that survive that blast
Two years of surgery and therapy
Took a miracle step down at Walter Reed
Threw away his walker, then his cane
Dano Parthmore was walking again
Chorus:
Stepped with his left leg, drag his right
Stopped to gain balance before his next stride
Drank for years 'till everything hurt
Got his pride back with a lot a hard work
Nothing on earth was easy to do
Walkin awhile in Dano's shoes
Verse:
Helped his dad farm plantin grain crops
Lost it all when prices dropped
Held court at the bar on a swivel stool
Thought the bottom of a bottle was his next move
Best buddy said it's time to get a life
Thought long and hard 'bout that advice
Left the bar to open a garage
Dano could fix anything on a car
Chorus:
Bridge:
Flags flew half mast last November
His move to improve is what we remember
That man's legacy is living on still
Always be a big pair of boots to fill
Chorus: Tag: End
