"Alana's Eyes" was my first song posted on Songramp, posted on the bobbysgarage page in November, 2004. It also is my first lyric turned into a song, and the second lyric I ever wrote. Cherie Maestas sings the original. We thought it might be different to have a male vocalist tell the story of the mother in the song, so Sergio Wals recorded the present version.
The Beslan school siege began on September 1, 2004. Chechen terrorists took 1,200 people, many school students, hostage. The siege ended violently a few days later, with over 300 hostages killed, including nearly 200 children.
I wrote this lyric after reading a news account about one young mother's personal tragedy at Beslan. In short, the terrorists had captured her, her school-aged daughter, and her baby. The woman was told she and the baby could leave, but the school-aged daughter had to stay at the school.

Alana's Eyes
I want to say I'm sorry
I want to calm her fears
I want to hold her close to me
And wipe away her tears
A mother shouldn't have to choose
It's burnt inside my mind
I told her "wait" and then I left
I left my girl behind
And I see her eyes
Alana's eyes
So terrified
Alana's eyes
The baby's only one year old
Alana, she was nine
The little one and I could go
The choice they said was mine
Alana used to smile
Alana used to sing
But when I'm thinking of her
I only see one thing
I see her eyes
Alana's eyes
So terrified
Alana's eyes
She trusted me to keep her safe
I took her to that school
I could have stayed there with her
Would death have been this cruel?
I'll never see a new sunrise
Or hope reborn in spring
I left behind my daughter
So I only see one thing
I see her eyes
Alana's eyes
So terrified
Alana's eyes
