Phil Marshall and I worked this one up for the White Ribbon Campaign. As you know, Phil is incredibly creative. I left the violence in the story between the lines of the lyrics, so Phil had the idea of evoking the imagery via the music.
The Reason Why
Music and performance by Phil Marshall
Words by Jeff Mondak
Lisa worked the lunch-time rush
At Tom's on Highway 9
And watched some kids each afternoon
Enough for getting by
See Lisa and her little man
Knew skies are sometimes grey
With t-ball games and reading time
They made it through each day
But things change
Days go by
People laugh,
People cry
Yes, things change
And then we try
To understand
The reason why
When Donny got the day-time run
He'd travel Highway 9
And who's to say if God or fate
Are what make stars align
Soon Lisa did his laundry,
Made dinner every night
And Donny taught her little man
The things he thought were right
For things change
Days go by
People laugh,
People cry
Yes, things change
And then we try
To understand
The reason why
Now the little guy's in middle school
And his grandparents do their best
He even has his mom's old room
And her picture on his desk
'cause things change
Days go by
People laugh,
People cry
Yes, things change
And then we try
To understand
The reason why
