ASongSmith originally wrote lyrics for Why and I wrote the music.  Jay suggested that if we wanted to post Why on SongRamp and elsewhere, Sheila could write her own lyrics.

Why was inspired by a news story about a man who was declared brain dead for about 23 years but who is now able to communicate through an electrical device.

Inside this empty shell I lie


And there's no one to tell me why.


I don't know how it came to be,


but no one seems to look at me.




And when they do look in my eyes


Why can't they see through this disguise?


Behind this mask, why can't they see


The person that I used to be?




I'm still the man I was inside,


But all expression's been denied,


Communication's come and gone.


In this life's game am I a pawn?




I want to cry out, but no sound!


And there's no answer that I've found


To make my thoughts turn into words.


They fly away like silent birds.




In thoughts I walk through fields of flowers,


My daydreams fill the lonely hours.


I drift in dreams I can't fulfill,


My body lifeless and still.




When speaking, why do you assume


there's no one else here in this room.


You touch my face, you touch my hand.


You touch my soul, I'm still a man!




My life's devoid of time and space


Suspended in this empty place.


One day turns into two, then three.


Will I be drifting endlessly?
