Music & lyrics by Lee McAboy & Sheila Kaufman
The arctic wolf stands all alone
Howling for her mate.
Her solitary note of longing
Telegraphs her fate.
Separated from her pack
And forced to find her way,
Sounds and scents surround her
that alert her she can't stay.
**********
She calls and then she listens
As the snow falls all around.
Her ears are cocked, she howls again,
And then she scans the ground.
No tracks for her to follow,
The snow has them erased.
Her mate, her soul, her only one,
Has vanished with no trace.
**********
Frantically he searches,
Bounding through the snow.
The blizzard fast approaches,
He knows not where to go.
Then faintly, in the distance,
One plaintive note he hears,
And that one note is just enough
To tell him she is near.
+++++++++
Snowflakes on her eyelashes,
Snowflakes on her nose,
Frozen on her whiskers
And the fur between her toes
Snowflakes in the air she breathes
Snowflakes fill the sky,
Black as night he runs to her.
If only he could fly.
Snowy white and darkest black,
They roll upon the ground,
Making wolf snow angels,
Their spirits know no bounds.
Making wolf snow angels
Now that she's been found.
+++++++++
From the wolf snow angels
Two sets of footprints go
And vanish in the distance
Vanish in the snow.
From the wolf snow angels
Off into the snow.
