The Devil’s Orchard June 2009
I.
I’ve been roaming ‘round the devil’s orchard
pickin’ rotten fruit up off the ground
won’t somebody come and shoo me out
you’d think I’d know better, I’d know better by now
but I just keep on creeping back when nobody is around
fillin’ up with so much bitter fruit
my heart and stomach have turned sour
II.
it’s written ‘love is patient’
baby, love is kind
love don’t ever say “it’s my way or the highway”
love don’t give her neighbor a piece of her mind
but to have that kind of love for another you’re got to spend some time
working in the Holy Spirit’s garden where the fruit,
it tastes so fine
BRIDGE:
when you go to roam around the devil’s orchard
you’re just beggin’ him to make you a fool
‘cause when he gets your belly full of that bitter fruit
he can add you to his box of broken, rusty tools
III.
so get out of that orchard
drop that rotten fruit
‘cause the devil, he won’t shoo you out he’d like to see you put down roots
so you better snatch yourself up and run
child, you better scoot, you better scoot
and make a beeline for the Spirit’s garden
hightail it to the Holy Spirit’s garden
get yourself back to the garden
put yourself to better use
