Recorded guitar and vocal as a quick scratch back in the winter after reading a story in the paper. Thought someday I'd make a production out of it. For some reason, I opened it up again now and thought maybe best to keep it simple...
The sun shined bright in the clear blue sky
The winter day you left
The snow piled high on our front walk
When you took those steps
You turned around and looked at me
As daddy started up the car
You said I’ll see you a year from now
And while I’m gone you can play my guitar
I stood in the street and waived
As I watched you go
And when I turned to walk back inside
I followed your footprints in the snow
Every night before I went to sleep
I looked out my window
Every night I prayed that I would see
Those footprints in the snow
The days and weeks turned into months
And I was sure I knew
Soon there’d be a knock on that front door
And it’d be you
I just turned thirteen and finally learned
That Hendrix song you showed me
That same day I opened the door and learned
There’d be no footprints in the snow
Every night before I went to sleep
I cried at my window
Every night I asked god why I wouldn’t see
Those footprints in the snow
Now I’m the age that daddy was
And this guitar has served me well
Got a son the same age you were
He knows the story how you fell
That winter day I took him
Where the new recruits all go
He said to me don’t worry dad
You’ll see my footprints in the snow
Every night before I go to sleep
I look out my window
Every night I pray I will see
Those footprints in the snow
