On Nov 1st of last year Pam Bowen and I started a song writing project in the writers room forum. I wanted to write a song about an urban legend in the Chicago area. There's a section in Woodlawn Cemetary called Showmen's Rest.It is a section of circus performers killed in a train accident and it's surrounded by 5 stone elephants. The legend is that you can hear the elephants cries at night. Now Brookfield zoo is about a mile away but it still makes a good story. Thanks Pam for making my dream a reality, it was fun. Sorry it took so long to get done but the holidays got in the way. Thanks Curt Carlson for adding your rocking strat lead and Mike O'connor for adding keys.
This is dedicated to all you entertainment troopers out there who knows that the show must go on.
A June night in Indiana 100 years ago
A wooden circus train was due to bring its show
There rode a strongman and a famous highwire act
Soon a fire in a brake stopped them in their tracks
chorus
They perform each evening
And pull up stakes by dawn
Not much rest for showmen
When the show must go on
Another train rushed from behind the engineer asleep
It rammed the circus cars and piled them in a heap
Flames and smoke, shouts and cries filled the morning air
Clowns and hands and roustabouts didn't have a prayer
repeat chorus
It's been a century since that fateful night
Five elephants made of stone guard that eerie site
Spirits roam the graveyard the neighbors will attest
Nightly cries of elephants ring out at Showmen's Rest
repeat chorus
