When I first came to Ireland, a couple of years ago, Irish singer Joe Dolan had just died suddenly, and the whole country was in mourning. I knew of him from a couple of UK hits in the 60's, (he was a knd of Irish Tom Jones), but over here he'd had a 40 year career with his songs in the charts most of that time.

It struck me that it would be nice to do a song about him, but it would need to be in a high key, and be in his style. I've incorporated  the tune from one of his big hits, (Goodbye Venice), in the intro and over the last chorus

There’s a statue down in Mullingar, of a man who made us proud 

From Ireland out across the globe, his music touched the crowd

Through poverty, and tragedy, he conquered all his fears

From Make Me An Island, and Sweet Rock n’ Roller, to Vegas and back here
