Ken Astill songs
When I first came to Ireland, a couple of years ago, Irish singer Joe Dolan had just died suddenly, and the whole country was in mourning. I knew of him from a couple of UK hits in the 60's, (he was a knd of Irish Tom Jones), but over here he'd had a 40 year career with his songs in the charts most of that time.
It struck me that it would be nice to do a song about him, but it would need to be in a high key, and be in his style. I've incorporated the tune from one of his big hits, (Goodbye Venice), in the intro and over the last chorus
Keyboard and vocals by me.
JOE (Composed by Ken Astill 18/10/2101, © )
There’s a statue down in Mullingar, of a man who made us proud
From Ireland out across the globe, his music touched the crowd
Through poverty, and tragedy, he conquered all his fears
His music touched both young and old, for almost forty years
Chorus
His powerful voice, could lift your heart, and it seems so long ago
A life cut short, a talent lost, (“The man we knew as “Joe”).
And now we have, his music left, it’s there for all to hear
His legacy inspires us all, as it spans across the years
His love of life, and generous way, soon earned respect and fame
On stage he took the world by storm, and we all learned his name
From the Drifters and the showband scene, he carved a new career
From Make Me An Island, and Sweet Rock n’ Roller, to Vegas and back here
Chorus [lyrics sung over]
(Goodbye Venice goodbye, I must leave you to die)
(Goodbye Venice goodbye, goodbye my love)
