I've worked with Irish country band, "Sound Affair" for about two and half years, and enjoy it very much. I've also been a 'jobbing' musician for most of my life in the UK, playing all kinds of music. So, when I get in my home studio, I tend to write 'non country' songs. This song is a reflection of some of the musical, (and social) changes that have happened during my lifetime. I've tried to keep the lyrics about the musical and social changes separate in the song.
LEGACY
When I was a young man just starting way back when.
I learned all I could from the old music men.
Rock ‘n roll was my passport to a new kind of life.
Then The Beatles showed us all, it was OK to write.
We were the baby boomers, with money and our own new ways.
Changing things forever, but not thinking’ we might have to pay.
So, what will be our legacy? Divorce and broken families?
We were double booked one night & when I got to the stand.
A guy was using backing tracks, “It’s cheaper than the band”!
I knew right there and then, that change was on the way.
We cut down to a 3 piece band. Just to make it pay.
Progress works in many ways, we’ve all become computer geeks.
Skype our friends and family, because it’s all become so cheap.
So, what will be our legacy? Facebook, reality TV?
Now music’s made a different way, and I don’t understand.
Digital’s a word we never knew back in the band.
There’s a gizmo helps you sing in tune, I’m certain I have read.
But I still use the bits that stick out both sides of my head!
Recession’s reared it’s ugly head, it’s all because of corporate greed.
We’ve been buying stuff we want, instead of only what we need.
So, what will be our legacy? The biggest debt in history?
