Ken Astill songs
When Sammy came to me with an idea for a song to promote the new local cycle track, I thought it was a bit weird.
I know there have been lots of songs about places and events, especially here in Ireland, so I put a melody and arrangement on to his chords and lyrics, and we recorded the song.
We gave it to the local radio station, and a few civic guys involved with the track, and it's had loads of plays. We even got an email from the Transport Minister for the Republic of Ireland, (Noel Dempsey), inviting us to present him with a copy at the launch of the new track extension.
The song itself has ended up a cross between a rock shuffle and an old fashioned swing feel. (We were trying to create the feeling of 'movement').
So here's Frank Sinatra meets the Beach Boys, + Larry Carlton!!
All vocals, e-drum kit, melody and arrangement, me.
Keyboards, chords & lyrics, Sammy.
Bass, rhythm & lead guitars, Joe.

THE GREENWAY
The Greenway starts in Newport, on the old railway track
It’s ten miles to Mulranny, & eighteen K to get back
On one side you have Clew Bay, it’s beauty to be seen
On the other are Nephin Mountains, majestic and serene
If you go on this adventure, you sure have to agree
Newport in the west of Ireland, is the place to be
CHORUS
So get out your old bicycle, give yourself a treat
So get out your old bicycle, give yourself a treat
Cycle to Mulranny, the views you will not beat
Sunbathe on the sandy beach, catch fish off the pier
Have lunch at Mulranny Park, relax with a beer
We thank the folks who gave the land, that saw that track completed
It is the best thing in the west, so come on, you can’t beat it.
View the many islands, nestled in Clew Bay
You can see Croagh Patrick, just across the way
Achill Island in the distance, what a sight to behold
You cycle down the Greenway, these wonders will unfold
So get yourself to Newport, where you can hire a bike
View that lovely scenery, you’ll never see the like
