Originally written by Koos Kombuis in Afrikaans ("Lisa se klavier"), I loved the song's story and with his permission translated it into English. He wrote me a heart-warming letter telling me that he thinks this version is better than the original. That was the greatest compliment I could have ever received from one of South Africa's best Afrikaans songwriters.

Original Title : LISA SE KLAVIER
Composer : Koos Kombuis
LISA ON THE KEYS
I have a friend
Who lives by the sea
On the slopes of Table Mountain
And at the end of day
She plays enchanting melodies
Her fingers know their way around
The scales of black and white
Where innocence and sin divide
The old piano knows inside
It understands the heart’s delight
Chorus (x2) :
And the whole world is at peace
Echoing the harmony
Of the grand piano
With Lisa on the keys
Lisa can’t stop playing
Once the notes fill up the night
She won’t let me go home
Or leave her sight
‘Til I’ve got no more cigarette left to light
I’m standing on her balcony
Sipping her apricot tea
While gazing down at Cape Town’s lights
At night
And the dark dark sea
Chorus(x2)
And down below swept off their feet
On the sidewalk of the street
A beggar and his comrade meet
Both looking up
From the dirty refuse heap
They know the grand piano’s tone
The nightly notes that stream
Through open doors in silent zone
And even though the neighbours moan
Still Lisa’s every beggar’s dream
Chorus (x3)
Table Mountain (Afrikaans: Tafelberg) is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa, and is featured in the Flag of Cape Town and other local government insignia.[2] It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park. The view from the top of Table Mountain has been described as one of the most epic views in Africa
