Agust Gudmundsson songs
Did I say Dodi?
I get a call from her telling me to come down from the top of Snowshoe Mountain to her Overlook condo, and bring my Revox. I get there and she has pushed all of the furniture in her living room to one corner and set up a mini stage right there in her little apartment. She had organ bass pedals beneath her seat, her Bose speakers bouncing off the walls and she was sitting on a stool with 12 sting on her lap saying: “Set it up.”
This recording is from that day, raw and untouched.
I had made the mistake of telling her that David Brown, who at the time was dating her, told me he was thinking of her when he wrote the lyrics. The music I put to his lyrics was just simple C walk-down, but she loved it and wanted to add it to her act.
Here is one mic in a condo.
In You
I used to think that this was it
That’s all I’d ever feel
That love was just in story books
More make believe than real
I used to think of politics
Newspapers that I’d read
The front page and the comic strips
Gave me little to believe
In you
I found a warm new feeling
In you
I found myself believing
In you
I found a brand new reason
To believe
In make believe
In you
I questioned and I disbelieved
The rainbows of my youth
I journeyed far
I journeyed wide
In my constant search for truth
I used to think my self complete
I spent each day alone
I never quite could understand
This feeling that I’ve known
In you..
I used to measure out my time
With books and magazines
Coffee cups and sips of scotch
Modern science and machines
The stars were just statistics
Sparkling in the night
And love remained a mystery
Until I got it right
In you..
I know that love songs are not supposed to be earth shattering compositions, but I think David set a standard with this one that I have yet to reach with my lyric writing. Man, is he good. He went beyond the typical I love you and related his observation of how his life changed with new love by describing his life before meeting Dodi. David has been recognized, btw. He has a book coming out next year and I hope everyone will buy it and experience his writing style. And, though Dodi has not been one of the formers, David is happily married to his 4,000th wife. And this one is the one that will keep him. Mary, I love you for loving David.
