BREAD, NOT BOMBS
by Man At The Window
Some years ago, Man At The Window were invited to headline an open-air festival highlighting poverty. We were delighted to accept since the issue was one that we had often addressed in earlier songs such as "Someone Like Me", "Only The Radical" and "The Red Queen's Race." However, our imagination was stimulated by the name of the charity which was organising the show - "Bread, Not Bombs". Their philosophy was that it's not enough just to throw money at the problem - raising awareness of policies carried out in the people's name was even more important. We decided to write a song specifically for the gig and this is the result. We never got round to recording it until recently and we hope you enjoy the result. Kyle sings the lead. We experimented with a different feel for the opening section before the reggae kicks in.
BREAD, NOT BOMBS
Tell it like it is, don't disguise the facts,
Don't paint it all mellow and hide it in the back,
Give it a change of name, it's still the same,
War is war, let's keep it plain.
Looked at the papers today,
Saw something, I couldn't say -
Famine or genocide?
Another mother grieves
No comfort for the bereaved,
How is it justified?
When you cut to the bottom lines,
When you read the signs,
We have a voice
And each of us faces a choice now,
Bread, not bombs, is what we are sayin',
So think about it.
Too many suffering pain.
A leader gives a command
To lay waste a foreign land
All in a working day.
Humankind is debased
Innocent life goes to waste.
It don't need to be this way.
When you cut to the bottom lines,
When you read the signs,
We have a voice
And each of us faces a choice now,
Bread, not bombs, is what we are sayin',
So think about it.
Too many suffering pain.
As long as I recall this is how it's been,
If you wanna get ahead, don't say what you've seen,
If you wanna stay afloat, don't rock the boat,
Too dangerous to speak your mind.
How much do we need and how much do we share?
How much is greed and how much is fair?
Too little too late to put it right?
Sleep well tonight...
When you cut to the bottom lines,
When you read the signs,
We have a voice
And each of us faces a choice now,
Bread, not bombs, is what we are sayin',
So think about it.
Too many suffer in vain.
