This is the cadenza from the composition Angels. In Angels it acts as a transition. But it can also stand alone as a composition for solo classical guitar as it was originally written.
The composition has two short thematic sections: Psalm for Kanan and Spanish Lies.
Psalm for Kanan is a cry to god for the loss of a loved one. The music begins with a three note bass line, which is repeated in form but with different notes throughout the movement ending, after a first string only short vertical scale passage, on the high B note at the nineteenth fret: a shrill cry to heaven.
Spanish Lies, as the name implies, is a pseudo Spanish sounding piece that includes some elementary Flamenco guitar work but does not really conform to any recognized Spanish or Flamenco rhythm. It is an angry discourse between a grieving soul and their god. It begins with a rasgueado executed E minor chord followed by a short E minor horizontal scale passage beginning on the open first string and ending on the open sixth string. The music continues with the repeated use of the E minor rasgueado chord interchanged with melodic scale passages. As it comes to a conclusion, the music settles into a final soft arpeggio reflecting reconciliation with god. The lies are found both in the music itself, not being Spanish, and the theme: a god that gives and also takes away.
