You were the pride and joy of your mother and me

I used to bounce you on the end of my knee

Gave you everything you wanted as we watched you grown

Never one time told you no

You made the varsity team when you were twelve years old

But a child reaps what his parents sow

We never learned how to tell you no

Was it the drugs that killed you or the whiskey and the beer

In the car that we gave you in your senior year

You promised me and mom you’ld drive it sober and slow

I’d give my own life now if you’ld have just said no

The guilt will kill us till the day that we die
