In Northumberland

Inspired from a passage in the English Book Of Prayer: "Deliver Us, Oh Lord, From The Fury Of The Norsemen". Being of Norse and Irish ancestry, this was a peculiar song to write, in that it seems as though I am celebrating the kicking of my own ass. LOL.
V1
I remember the rush and the smell of the green
As we set foot on a shore that few of us had ever seen.
And through the fog there came a tolling of voices and bells
As the soon to be slaughtered prepared themselves

V2
And I remember the feeling of contest denied
As they fell from our axes and laid there and died.
Not a one raised up a hand to try to sheild our iron blades
For their fingers were folded together as they prayed
In Northumberland.

V3
And I remember the long nights of laughter and grog
As we bragged of our victories delivered from our Gods
We raised a ram's horn up to Odin in Valhalla's hallowed hall
And re-damned the ones we murdered and their spirits as they called
In Northumberland.

V4
And I remember the passion as I layed there by her side
As we made love by the fire, wrapped in leather hides
And I was careful not to mix the sound of my lover's breath
With the haunting memories lingering of the one's sent to their death
In Northumberland.
