She saw them as she took the second sip of her coffee. She was sitting in her kitchen, enjoying the quiet of the dawning morning. Looking out the window, into the backyard, they were hanging on the clothes line.Socks. A pair of socks. White, they were. With gray on the heels. Hanging there. On HER clothes line.She wondered whose they were. She'd never seen them befor. She was the only one in the household that did the laundry, and SHE didn't hang them on the line. Who did?

Socks!Presently, the children came into the kitchen for breakfast. They sat at the table, and asked their mother what she was staring at."Socks", she said. 

She asked if any of the children had hung them on the line. They all answered NO. 

Now all of the children sat, saying nothing, and staring out the window at the socks.Her husband walked into the kitchen, and saw his family staring out the window, saying nothing. All they did was stare. He commented on how beautifully quiet it was this morning...different from all the other mornings when everyone was in a quandry trying to get their breakfast first, screaming, fighting...He asked what everyone was staring at, and why they were so quiet."SOCKS", they answered in unison.
