Harvest ended late this year...One night, driving home in the dark, I had an inspiration. Why did shepherds, guarding their flocks, get the big announcement of the Messiah? These guys were the "cowboys" of their day; loners, out on the range, guarding the flock, fighting off animals and rustlers. Undoubtedly their favorite psalm was psalm 23. Like David, they probably carried their version of the guitar to sing to the flock at night, so angels singing to them wouldn't be quite so strange.

Maybe the shepherds, hardened and gruff from years on the range, were the perfect people to stand guard over a young, tired, confusedcouple far from home, outin the barn with a newborn. The governnment couldn't be trusted; the locals didn't care. But no cowboy then or now would allow anything but a peaceful night out in the barn, with a new born baby. And they were savvy enough to know the story of the Messiah, so when the angels appeared to them, they didn't run, or ask philosophical questions: they headed to the manger to check it out.

once there, they would fall back on reflex. No better protection for the baby Jesus than a bunch of cowboys, and no more familiar place to bed down than with the animals in the barn...
