I've lived outside of Portsmouth here for close on 15 years
These hills they hold my memories
These valleys catch my tears
It's here I lost my true love
It's here I will remain
Through the cold cold nights through the Appalachian rain

He passed away on Christmas day 11 years gone by
Though it was him we buried then I swear 'twas me that died
Well come and fill these empty arms 
Come and ease my pain
On this cold cold night in this Appalachian rain

I know that it's sin there have been so many others
As I tried to still the outcry of my soul
I know you don't find lasting love in momentary lovers
But I dare not bare this sorrow alone

I know that you have torments too
I know that's why you're here
To steal this time forbidden wine and then to disappear
And we shall part with helpless hearts no lasting comfort gain
