Least Momma Died Before Elvis

Momma was born back in thirty-three
Spent her whole life in near poverty
The year I was born was the first time she saw Elvis
For a small town girl it was a big thrill
A big star from Memphis in a pink Coupe Deville
At least Momma died before Elvis
‘cause that would’ve broken her heart
Sundays we’d sing at our church in the glen
Every day chores kept us busy back then
Sometimes there’d be a dance at the Donnelly’s barn
Saturday nights we’d gather round the radio
Momma would cry if she heard Heartbreak Hotel
At least Momma died before Elvis
‘cause that would’ve broken her heart
Momma spent her day singin’ Elvis songs
Love Me Tender was her favorite sing along
She had five hungry mouths to feed like the song normal">In The Ghetto
Times were tough all those years ago
But we saved up to send her to the Vegas show
At least Momma died before Elvis
‘cause that would’ve broken her heart
Since then I’ve seen brighter days
But my memories of Momma are all the same
Even though I know she’s moved on to higher ground
Now every February I buy her a rose
I lay it on her grave ‘cause every good son knows
It’s best momma died before Elvis
so Elvis couldn’t break her heart
