I am not sure what happened to this, some songs seem to just disappear from my list. So I am reposting.
This song was inspired by trading emails with Springtone (Julie Springer) about our Wiener Dogs. My dog was born into privilege (AKC, the right school, parents socially connected, etc) but her dog, Otto, came from a rescue shelter. I wrote this from Otto’s point of view and Dale sings Otto’s part. I came to the studio yesterday with a melody and even some chords, Dale liked my chords, but just not where I had them. The cool lead fills are typical Dale. Dale went the extra mile on this, until we got the hook line like I was hearing it (after singing it for a week). This song is kind of Kenny Chesney does REO Speedwagon.
I guess as songwriters we ask silly questions and then try to answer them. I wondered if dogs pray and if God listens. I decided no, that it takes a human to save a dog. It is probably coincidence my best friends on the ramp, Sprintone and Fritsch are also Wiener Dog owners & lovers. To me if you don't have a long dog, you have the wrong dog (actually love most all dogs)...
TO SAVE A DOG
© 2010 Jon Hanson ?? Key of E (recorded at Dale Crockett Studios)
I lived life tied up and beaten
And there were days I hadn’t eaten
I drank from puddles in the rain
The preacher at the church next door
Said love is something we shouldn’t ignore
It’s hard to know love when all you’ve known is pain
Back then I thought that maybe dogs weren’t part of God’s plan
I need something to restore my faith in man
I ALWAYS WONDERED IF GOD HEARS DOGGY PRAYERS
SOME DAYS I FELT IT MIGHT BE MORE THAN I COULD BEAR
BEFORE I WAS RESCUED LIFE WAS PRETTY RAW
GOD MAY SAVE HUMANS BUT IT TAKES A HUMAN TO SAVE A DOG
Now I have a new home and a new name
Since the people from the shelter came
I’m safe, fed, and warm in my new place
My new family shows me real love
Now life’s just one long belly rub
I don't know about God, I just know man’s grace
People like to say that a Dog is man’s best friend
I’m glad got a chance at love again
Chorus repeat:
